Kym Dillon Piano Sonata, Jem Savage Solo
August 15 @ 8:00 PM - 10:00 PMFree
On the 15th of August Geelong based composer/pianist Kym Dillon is positively delighted to premiere his first piano sonata, a work which for him represents a major step forward in his ongoing journey as a composer. You may wonder — what’s so important about a piano sonata? For over a decade Kym has been an active composer for a wide variety of ensembles, resulting in multiple works for orchestras, choirs, big bands and wind bands.
Though writing for larger ensembles is a significant challenge, to date his works have been of a relatively shorter length, mostly under ten minutes. A few years ago he was challenged by a mentor to create a longform work, and after a great deal of study and immersion in longform piano works by Beethoven, Liszt, Scriabin and Messiaen he finally has something to show for himself…
A sonata is for Kym an opportunity for a solo instrument to create an entire narrative over a substantial amount of time. Analogous to moving from a short story to a novel or from a short film to a feature film, the challenge is to not simply to come up with a single strong musical idea but now to construct a larger narrative of various musical ideas that are both individually engaging as well as unified as a whole artwork. A piano sonata has the potential to take a listener on a sonic journey through many different places and ideas, all through the workings of a single instrument. Kym hopes this idea intrigues you, and that you will share the experience of these new pieces first performance with him as he performs it himself at the Courthouse, with thanks to NEAL
