Ayrlie Lane is a Torquay-based multi-disciplinary artist, incorporating elements of traditional drawing and painting practices with up-cycling, floristry and makeup artistry disciplines. She draws inspiration from the natural world around her, exploring themes of pattern, femininity, anxiety and self-reflection.
Growing up as a classical musician with a passion for art, Lane went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in Drawing at RMIT (2012), during which she received a scholarship to study en plein air painting practices with the Rome Art Program in Italy. She then completed a diploma in Specialist Makeup Services at the Academy of Makeup in 2014, and became a member of the Geelong Illustrators collective in 2017.
‘Fractal Petals’ explores a visual variation of the phenomena of semantic satiation – where the repetition of a word or phrase ad nauseum causes it to lose meaning. Using self-portraiture, combined with elements of body painting and floristry to explore feelings of anxiety and discomfort.
Each work incorporates the disruption of the human silhouette, covering various parts of the eyes, mouth and other primary points of body language. Combined with the dismantling and reorganization of singular pieces of organic material such as petals, seedpods or leaves, the recognition of flora and the female body as things of visual beauty is recontextualized, instead replaced with feelings of mild unease, incoherency and otherworldliness.
CHYA Gallery openings are free events. All welcome. Light nibbles and refreshments will be provided.
